Trivia/FAQ
What are sun umbrellas and why are they used?
Sun umbrellas are accessories that provide shade and protection from the sun, rain or wind, and increase comfort and reduce temperature stress. Sun umbrellas are used in gardens, terraces or beaches. They can be of different shapes, sizes, materials, colours and can have different bases or methods of attachment.
With centre pole
The pole is in the middle of the shade and is most often round. This is the most widespread form, which excels due to its simple construction and affordable prices. They are used in gardens, patios, and restaurants.
With side pole
The sun umbrella has a side pole, so the pole and base do not disturb the space under it.
Balcony umbrella
The sun umbrella for the balcony is smaller than for the garden. It is also portable and suitable for use on the beach.
Beach umbrella
The beach umbrella is smaller and lighter and is designed for use on sandy or rocky surfaces. It has a thinner and lighter pole that can possibly be driven into the ground.
Types of sun umbrella holders and stands
Stands for sun umbrellas ensure the stability and safety of umbrellas against wind, rain, or sun. The stand provides stability with its mass or attachment, and the holder is an integral part of the stand, which is most often in the form of a tube into which the umbrella pole is inserted. The holders for the most common centre pole umbrellas are round, just as their poles are round.
Concrete stands
They weigh more than 50 kg, so they are often equipped with handles or wheels for easier movement. They are difficult to handle and require a lot of storage space.
Stands with additional weighting
They have a structure that is stabilised with concrete slabs or sandbags. They are easier to carry, but they greatly obstruct the surroundings and require a lot of storage space.
Plastic stands
They are lighter and cheaper, suitable for smaller and lighter umbrellas. Plastic stands are usually hollow and must be filled with water or sand to achieve the desired mass. Plastic stands are easy to carry after emptying but require a lot of storage space.
Holders for sun umbrellas
They enable the attachment of sunshades to walls, fences, tables, or other surfaces. Holders are suitable there where there is not enough space to place a stand.
Built-in holders
They consist of two parts; they require the installation of a foundation part or an anchor that cannot be moved. They provide maximum stability and do not disturb the surroundings. The holders require disassembly and storage after use.
Choosing the right stand or holder for your umbrella
The choice of sun umbrella holder is important as it affects the usability, stability, safety, and appearance of the umbrella.
Sun umbrella size and weight
The stand must be suitable for the size and weight of the umbrella so that the wind does not overturn it. The larger and heavier the shade, the heavier and sturdier the stand with the holder must be.
The type of sun umbrella
The holder should be compatible with the type of umbrella you have. If you have a shade with a centre pole, you need a holder that has a round hole for the pole. If you have a shade with a side pole, you need a holder that has a pole mount. If you have a wall shade, you need a holder that attaches to the wall.
Price and quality
A stand with a holder should be affordable, but not at the expense of quality. It must be made sufficiently strong, solid and durable. It should also be easy to use, maintain, and clean. Of course, it must also be aesthetically appealing and suit your taste and style.
